Gas price 5 comments

When I was in college, gas was five bucks a gallon for like a year. Now it's barely over two most of the time.

You either throw your chest out like that or your tits drag your neck forwards. That's just how it works.

I had a chore sheet. If I did allll my chores, I could "earn" up to 50c per week.
Parents, don't do this to your kids. It mostly teaches them that A) you do chores for a reward, instead of because they need to be done, and B) that the rewards for hard work are negligible. Either just get them to do their chores normally, or offer a reward that can buy more than one can of soda per week. - well, actually, I couldn't buy the can of soda without saving up for a couple of weeks? Cause I was expected to tithe out of that.

Never did a damn thing for mine, unfortunately, or any of the six people in my family. Plus, someone totally pulled the "oh, you shouldn't take psychiatric meds, all you need to beat it is a good diet and exercise" thing on one of my late teenaged cousins with it, and, well, now there are five people in my family with chronic depression.

That's cute, unless you have actual chronic depression. Then running will just make you want curl up on yourself sobbing because there's no endorphin high to kick back the burn, and weight training just makes you hate yourself for trying to pick up your toothbrush the next morning.

Because he can. I mean, let's face it, if my job didn't have a dress code I'd wear flip-flops and gym shorts constantly.

Secondary potential problem: Using GMOs means homogenizing strains; homogeneity means vulnerability, if a new pest arises that the GMO has not been engineered against. Swathes of crop could be dead before a fix could be implemented, drastically cutting the world's food supply for that year. GMOs are necessary to feed the world's rising population, but we should also engender strict regulations requiring a significant portion of cultivation to be "heirloom" varieties as well; this will both provide potential protection in the form of potentially immune strains (most "new" pests are just a rehash of a pest type corn saw a few thousand years ago, anyway), AND preserve the genetic diversity we'll need to draw from to engineer new and better GMOs in the first place.

No, that's an actual denomination. Subgroup? They're not *destructive* enough to be called a cult, really, although they can be scary anti-medicine depending on your local branch.

Those guys volunteer to do one of the most stressful, psychologically damaging jobs in existence, for crappy pay, for an ultimate boss that at times can't be trusted to spend them as if they were no more than loose change. As long as they do it in a way that isn't going to seriously injure or kill anyone, I'd say they're entitled to fuck around a little.

*Exactly.* The fact that the current face of junior politics is still so heavily male-skewed indicates one or more of these factors is excluding women. Maybe female candidates can't get initial campaign support (because there are so few women in politics, so why would parties/campaign orgs assume women can get elected?). Maybe political networks have trouble socially accepting women - after all, it's easier to assimilate a candidate who's "more relatable," and our culture creates some fundamental differences in the way men and women socialize. Maybe constituents still have trouble seeing a woman who knows what she's talking about as a "leader" instead of a "shrew." Maybe it's all of these things, or different combinations in different districts. But, as you yourself pointed out, it's *not* just who's qualified - or junior representation would be at least 50% female.

Dude. In the modern environment, women are statistically more likely to be educated, and at a higher degree, than men. They also, as noted, skew towards fields heavier in the social sciences than in "STEM," aka math-heavy fields, which would put them in the majority in political roles and in related administrative roles. So, if we were just electing the "most qualified" representatives out there, the lowest levels of government - junior representation in state and local arenas, etc. - would be awash in women. But it's kinda not.

Srsly, if we just voted for the most qualified people to represent their district, then roughly half of them *would be* women, so, uh, pretty sure we don't do that yet.

I've never made a man sleep on the couch in order to make him uncomfortable. The one time I ever insisted on sleeping in a separate room from my significant other was on an occasion when he'd betrayed my trust deeply enough that I couldn't relax and fall asleep in the same room with him. TL;DR the "sleep on the couch" thing may be about *her* feelings, not yours.

American expats abroad clump up into little communities where they can live according to American ways of life. It's not about wanting to subvert the local culture, it's about desperately wanting a little island of home, of people who relate to your experiences. Just because you've transplanted your life doesn't mean you suddenly don't miss Mom's meatloaf - or, in their case, Mom's kibbeh.

To be fair, you can say much the same thing of Christianity, Buddhism, or Confucianism. There is no single destructive religion.
