Hard to say. Beyond a desire to reunify for idealist reasons- the regime does have practical reason to do so. Even if reunification will effectively erase the DPRK as it exists and communism with it. To a failing regime it is a graceful “out.” they can make their problem the problems of the south too. The leaders can look like and be remembered in history as national heroes to a new Korea, founding fathers who needed the war. They could bargain immunity and deals which would set up the top cadre with wealth for life, and make them legitimate global citizens with the ability to travel, conduct business, and enjoy their wealth freely. But there’s also HUGE risk, now or years/generations later. This could be just the opportunity to catch their breath and get what they can from the arrangement while it lasts to be fortified for decades more stalemate. It could be a way to infiltrate or subvert the south. It’s hard to say. I think it should be treated as legitimate but with proper cautions.
