Would there be any practicality to decriminalizing current illicit drugs and the use of said drugs?
tarotnathers13th · 5 years ago
It would likely open up the specific drug industry to taxation, Some argue it would also drastically reduce the jail population.

Yes big tax money right there, I don’t think they should legalize shit like heroin tho

Tax, save havens for safe use, testing for purity, relaxing burden on the court system, freeing up police to focus on other crimes and getting rid of an incentive to target minorities... just for starters.

By decriminalize i don't necessarily mean legalize but rather not as harsh of sentences when caught with illicit substances. In all honesty i think this would be the best solution to the current drug situation

Legalize them, but have everyone know you use them. Like on your ID or some shit.

We cannot keep drunks from doing stupid shit. We should throw some other substances into the mix.

Yes but drinks doing stupid shit doesn't always end up with them in jail for years and years whereas illicit drug use does. Rather i think someone caught doing stupid shit on drugs and alcohol should go through aa type classes and have a chance to get away from the drugs.

I see it as a double edged sword
On one hand, the government can really benefit from these kinds of sales, and they’d be doing the drugs anyways, but now it’s safer.
On the other, it might bring a cigarette Effect, if it’s still hard to get, but they grow up around users, it might make them users too.
There are two sides to this argument, but I’m on neither

Anyone who needs a class for drugs doesn't need a class on drugs; they've been on em for years.

My point is.. there is absolutely nothing you can do; even shooting people in the street, that is going to stop a hardcore addict from their fix. Put them in a box and make sure they don't hurt other people is all I'm saying.

Awfully extreme. The class isn't too help them use better but rather to ween them from the substance abuse.

My point is that 10-11,000 people die in alcohol related traffic accidents annually. Tens of thousands get liquored up and commit acts of domestic violence. No amount of counseling the junkie brings back a friend killed by an impaired driver. Increased penalties and decreased tolerance for DWI has done little to stop these idiots. Additionally too many people with mental health issues self medicate and make the situation worse for themselves and others, giving these people more options will do even more harm.

"Increased penalties and decreased tolerance for DWI has done little to stop these idiots." You're right, that's why i think rather than continued attempts to make laws to prevent idiots from abusing substances we should treat them when we catch them while they're just getting started abusing. 10-11,000 is such a low number when you account for the 300 million+ people that live in the us.

12000 a year are shot and murdered and my governor stands st a podium proclaiming that one it too many.
