A movie to watch would be Silent Voice.

Future Diary is a bit crazy, by the way. Try Seraph of the end, although it's not really modern day.

kobayashi's dragon maid is a good one in that vein

Death Note or Steins; Gate

Although I guess technically Steins; Gate isn't supernatural but more sci-fi.... Not mecha and robots though...

If you like gorgeous art and beautiful music try After The Rain, it's a slice of life and romance although the romance isn't really a big part. It isn't supernatural or anything but it's really beautiful to watch and I haven't told you much because the plot might deter some people and make them ignore a really lovely anime.

I know you wanted a modern day anime but I haven't seen many that I liked in that setting. One that's set in future Japan is AICO, very cool concept and not very long, art is great.
Blend S is super cute and easy to watch romcom.
The Acient Magu’s Bride is magical, dramatic and set in England. Gakuen Alice is also supernatural and a romcom but deals with some darker topics, all of them are kiddos. Snow White with Red Hair is set in medieval times but it's good, art is great and yes this one also has romance. I'm a romance fan.
Demi-chan wa Kataritai is supernatural and set in a school with some student who are demi- human, about their struggles and their relationship with a teacher who wants to learn about them, very easy watch.
NET-JUU NO SUSUME is cute, about this chick who lives games and this dude who likes games and about their lives becoming entangled. Sorry I couldn't find many catering to what you wanted but try some of these out if you're interested.
