I know. I simply have no interest in any of those things, either.

The thing about always being neutral is that you don't really have any real friends.

Rand had nothing against empathy or charity as we know it, she hated taxes and other involuntary things.
If a person does good because it feels good, there's no problem, but when a person is forced to do what someone else thinks is good is what she was against.
You have to remember, she watched the Russian Empire get taken over by the Soviet Union. Of course she hated the idea of people forced to do "good", she grew up seeing it all go too far.

Hitler and Hirohito wanted to conquer the world. If we didn't fight them in Europe and the Pacific, we would've been fighting them in our own streets, with our own people being butchered and burnt.
Besides, the UN is toothless, and even the bad guys are a part of the organization. They can't be counted on to do jack shit, they may even appease the next Hitler, or be him.
Tl;dr: Everything you suggested would've only made things worse, and do not presume to speak on your grandfather's behalf if he didn't tell you that himself.

I think there's enough people trying to discredit candidates they don't like that the fund became a necessity.

Their brand of neutrality isn't appeasement, or hoping for salvation, their neutrality is them simply saying "I don't hate you, but if you fuck me, I will fuck you". Simply put, it's what more nations should strive for.
