I consider myself to be extraordinarily lucky to have been born an American. As we are a land of immigrants, refugees, and exiles, it is ingrained in our culture to be thankful to and proud of our ancestors and those who came before.
We might not have been here for it (though my family has been in-country since before it was a country), but everything that shaped us and everything we are building off of was established by extraordinary people. Innovators, pioneers, working men and woman, all helped build us up. Is it not worth being proud of them for building the lives we enjoy today? To take pride in what our own grandparents and great grandparents achieved?
Think about this, most of what I said can apply to any single nation.

Then take pride in the nation that does exist, like everything Germany was involved in during the Cold War and beyond.
But I take pride in being Native American, too. They don't exist as a proper nation either, I'm just proud of our history and culture. My ancestors fought hard, and they fought well. Just because they lost and I wasn't there when it happened is no reason to forsake their memories and achievements.

That's some bullshit. WW2 started because Germans were desperate, hungry, and angry enough for a fringe political group to seize power.
There is a large difference between patriotism and ultranationalism.

You Germans have a lot to be proud of, in the early 20th century you revolutionized modern warfare, in the late half of the century your culture survived being occupied by the Soviet Union and the Western Allies. Hell, you all even managed to build a reputation as no-nonsense, near infallible engineers.
