I've heard that some musical academies accept people just by hearing the music they play, that they keep their eyes closed during admissions. I think that's cool because even kids with not the most pleasing visage can get there if they have talent and work hard.
In many professional orchestras, it's required that you have a blind audition (only listening to the audition, not looking) due to past discrimination against people from their looks.
I play the violin and my style has always been Asian pop and rock songs. I've been turned down from many auditions due to this but I don't care. I refuse to change my style to git other peoples view of correct. When I was 12 I had to play a piece to my class and everyone thought I would play a sloppy love song but the look on their faces when the backing track began was priceless.
