Down syndrome is actually pretty awesome. Until my 2year was born, I'd never really had any experience with anyone with disabilities. Now, Im amazed at my own ignorance before she became mine.
I think both are right. People with Down syndrome are awesome, and so is the diagnosis. To people who have never had any eperience with those that have down syndrome, it's the diagnosis they don't understand that usually leads to avoidance or hurtful behavior. But its those who have Down syndrome who show everyone that it's something to celebrate. My daughter isnt awesome inspite of her Down syndrome, its part of what makes her so amazing.
To those who do not know, there is a whole culture and community connected with Down syndrome. You can celebrate people as individuals and their diagnosis. I am weirdly excited when I meet someone with Down syndrome or their parents. I love introducing my daughter to them and talking with them. There is an instant connection and understanding that we share.
