Violet absolutely IS a wavelength of light. You're thinking of pink (or magenta) which is essentially anti-green on the color wheel. (Via minutephysics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9dqJRyk0YM )
Actually I watched a similar video by someone else. And I think it's ultraviolet actually with that video, not purple. It's pretty widely accepted on the color wheel that purple is a combination of blue and red, and pink is pretty much a shade of red. It explained that on the visible light spectrum, red and green make yellow, which is in between them. Then green and blue make cyan, which is also in between them. Red and blue has yellow, green, and cyan in between them but there is no green to make those colors so our brain makes up a new color to compensate the lack of green
