I always thought they were gender neutral because they would be envious of all genders

Well, in the anime, the female-looking and male-looking homunculi are identified with the pronouns of that gender. Lust and Sloth are "she"s and the rest are "he"s. I just didn't pay attention when they said "he" instead of "she" for Envy.

Ok real talk: Envy is genderless. They just refer to him as a "he" just to make things easier. That's why he looks like a buff giy, but with a woman's voice that sounds like she smokes 4 packs a day. Envy is also a kickass character
