Because people have perfect sense of the world around them and 360 vision with perfect hearing at all times. Are u stupid? The artifical noise saves lives, people could still get hit even if they were paying attention

Everybody has differences when it comes to attention.
After all we are human, and some of us are more prone to distraction than others.
You can say what you want, but the reality doesn't change.
I think it's more because in highly populated areas everything makes noise. People are physically adapted to gauge safety by what noises they hear, and the approach of a too-quiet car might be ignored in favor of something that's not as imminently dangerous drowning it out. Plus, you know...blind people.
Police were trained to use caution with these things. Apparently drunks sometimes pass out at red lights. When an officer arrives on the scene the first step is to knock on the window, they have no way of knowing if this is an electric car or a switched off real car, officers were being struck when they startled sleeping EV drivers who panicked and hit the accelerator.
My husband just bought a hybrid and I hate it. We have a blind man in our neighborhood and it kills me every time I see him listening for cars while trying to cross a street. I'm terrified he's going to get hit.
