My sister used to do this all the time. She would watch TV while being on her phone, and then she would rewind the past 20 minutes of the show because she missed it while being on her phone.
I always use my phone during movies (except ones at the theater, but I rarely go there). I actually hate watching TV and movies, I only do it because people I know really want to watch something. I'd probably be bored to literal tears if I didn't have something else to keep me occupied alongside it when I'm stuck in front of a non-interactive screen.

My mom does this and it kinds pisses me off. She'll have a show on as background noise while she plays some Facebook game on her phone, and if you so much as touch the remote she's like, "I'm watching that,"
