Numerous countries became independent from The Russian Empire, USSR or Russian Federation, and many smaller countries gained independence from those countries. A list of countries especially in South America gained independence from Spain. Quite a few countries gained independence when the Ottoman Empire was overthrown, France had numerous territories such as Cambodia and Vietnam. The South Koreans celebrate independence from the Empire of Japan... its a long list. Brittain is well known to have held many colonies, but the world is and was full of empirialists. History is full of the rise and fall of nations, and where any nation stands at one point another power held rule.

Yeah getting yourself whooped back to your own country several times is not an achievement.
