There was a similar story in 1929, a man named "Howard" put an ad in newspapers, asing for just 1 dollar, no more, no less. If people tried to send him more, he wouldn't accept it. It was really mysterious and thouands of people were convinced he was up to something and they would be rewarded. But on the last day, he just took off with all the money. Most people were feeling too stupid to sue, but some tried and the police told them the guy didn't promise anything.
