I don't think anyone is saying we're the worst in the world, or if they do it's just meaningless hyperbole. Almost everyone in the US knows that there are countries that are much worse, even if they think the situation can be improved.
saudi arabia doesn't actually oppress women as much as people think. My mum works there and she is portfolio controls manager for one of the biggest construction companies in the middle east and she had no problem getting that because of her being a woman.
Thank you internet for comparing Guatemala to Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, specifically if you consider Guatemala has several laws that favor minorities and neither gays nor women are stoned as punishment. Great.
