It’s zeitgeist. For awhile, hating the popular was considered cool. As these things go, “counter culture” is embraced by the mainstream and thus no longer relevant. So it became cool to embrace terrible things ironically. We are now moving to a phase where it’s cool to embrace the mainstream popular again, as that itself became a form of counter culture. It seems the main criteria be that one is “self aware” of the popularity of a thing they are embracing, and not merely embracing it blindly. Humorously, where once it was people posting memes to mock those embracing popular culture, now we have a meme which mocks those rejecting popular culture. At the end of the day I suppose our interests alone never made anyone interesting, a combination of a persons whole is what does that, with presentation being the gate which invites or turns away further examination.

It's really dependant on the reasons.
Lets start with something like Rick and Morty. Love it or hate it, its popular(or used to be). If you go up to someone who hates ST and ask "why tho" and they say some shit like "its not my show" or "i just dont like it" or some general reason like that, you would be turned off and think that person is very flat. However, if they were able to write an essay on how Season 1 was a great setup but was flatly ended and Season was a good successor but fails to propel the show anywhere with its terrible subplots and S3 being a terrible solution to both, you would be intellectually provoked, and thus interested. Maybe disliking things isnt very interesting, but the reasons why are much more interesting, and thats what people should look at instead.
