This is a true story, and still a brave and heroic one- but the headlines and pictures may be misleading. The bear was wandering a neighborhood and wildlife control was sent. They tranq darted the bear- but the bear ran into the gulf before the drugs kicked in. The man is a biologist with the department who saw the bear swimming out and realized it would drown once the drugs kicked in.
The man swam out in front of the bear and tried to scare the bear back in. They were about 25 yards from shore in about 4 feet of water. The bear was able to stand on its hind legs and did so. The drugs kicked in and it fell over backwards. The photos are of the biologist keeping the brats head above water while he dragged it back to shore. Once on land they used a backhoe to lift the bear into a truck.
So still very brave. Still saved a bear. But he wasn’t just some random guy, he was an animal expert called to deal with the bear, and he didn’t just stumble on a drowning bear. The bear was running from the wildlife team sent after it. To answer some of the questions or address some assumptions the headline alone may summon up.
