Not necessarily altruism at work here. In times of crisis, mobs and gangs have a tendency to show up and support their community because it fosters a sense of debt in the community. People are more likely to look the other way on their crimes if they feel like they owe the gangs. It's also been done by the Yakuza supporting their communities after natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.
they "hate all things red", so does that mean, if one gets a graze or a cut, they'll kill them, get blood on someone else, kill them also, and so on and so on?
