Don't wanna sound like a preachy hippie wanker here so I won't rant too much, I'll just say that my hair got a lot nicer after I stoped using commercial shampoos. Turns out that using chemicals that aggressively strip your hair of all sebum isn't very good. So yeah maybe the overpriced crappy hair products are the problem rather than the solution.
Washing your hair with nothing but cold clean water is recommended but if you have to use soap or shampoo most people don't need to use more than a dime size dab; longer hair can use up to a nickel sized dab. Most people use way too much soap and this can have negative effects on your hair.
Yeah, and the same goes for skincare. Both of my parents had very little acne as teens so when I got acne, they didn't get that it was just hormones, they thought I was a lazy slob who didn't wash my face and forced me to use a bunch of skincare products that messed my skin up soooo much more. Now I wash my face with regular solid soap, moisturize with baby oil and exfoliate like twice a month, and my skin looks better than ever. Less is more, having a 20 step skincare routine every day isn't good for your skin or your wallet.
