Period pains are basically physiologically identical to headaches. Lack of magnesium (an important electrolyte) causing the muscles to spasm (like a cramp) and restrict blood flow, leading to anaerobic energy production then lactic acid and the sensation of pain as the lactic acid sensitizes pain receptors. There are therefore many things us girls can do to reduce the chances of getting period pains. Increasing magnesium intake through food or supplements is a good start and probably the most effective way. Roughly 80% of americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and this number increases for teenage girls due to various reasons including poor diet, caffeine intake, stress and lack of knowledge. Honestly it helped me and my sister. BTW I have a degree in biological science.
