I started reading Stephen King books as a teenager (I'm 46 now). His creative mind lures you into the world he's pieced together of the strange co-existing with the seemingly normal. And unlike most of the movies made from his books, the ending of his books are almost always jaw dropping and shocking (he's ended a few sort of like the Soprano's final episode) the good guy may or may not get the girl, the most endearing character in the entire book may not survive to the epilogue. That's what I loved about his books. Unlike so many authors, the endings of his books were not predictable. Nothing irritates me more than an author who has predictable endings (I read quite a few Dean R. Koontz books and while they were awesome, the endings were sappy)
