That wasn't his death, he fought the Balrog on the bridge. The Balrog falls into the abyss of the pit and subsequently drags Gandalf with him. After falling for an immense amount of time, they both plunge into water at the bottom. Another fight ensues, until the demon flees into the dark tunnels. Gandalf pursues the creature up the spiraling flight of the Endless Stair. The two climb until they reach Durin's Tower and the living rock of Zirakzigil. Fight, fight, fight. The Grey finally throws down his enemy and darkness takes him. This scene took all of eight days and details the effective death of 'Gandalf the Grey.' I say effective because he is the equivalent of an angel, an Istar. He says, 'Naked I was sent back, until my task is done,' addressing waking up after nineteen days of his body laying lifeless upon the top of the tower. He essentially leveled up in the fight against the Balrog and prevented the rest of the party from receiving any XP. Gandalf was a douche.
