It was mainly about the south wanting to trade with europe on their own, and the north didn't like it. There were many factors, including some people in europe who wanted a war (the usual suspects; aka rothschilds family), with britain and france involved; actually, fun fact, the tsar of russia was bros with lincoln, and actually sent some of russia's navy to guard some of our ports on both oceans to keep europe from getting involved. The "north" (the federal government, really) wanted more control of the country.
I'm pretty split on the war, because aside from slavery (which wasn't truly necessary; they could have picked all of the cotton themselves and been just fine), I think the south was more "right" in the conflict, but then they were being manipulated by these evil european bankers. Lincoln, like Kennedy and Jackson, went against these banks and got shot for it. Lincoln was also pretty "right" in my mind. You know he intended to send the blacks back to africa afterwards?
