It's what we call a moral dilemma. I would never answer questions like this that easily. Would you immediatley shoot a kidnapped plane with hundreds of innocent passengers if you know it's heading towards an even larger group of people?
Also you never quite know where exactly charity money is going to. How would you want to explain this to the hostage's families? What would you say if, say, your only child gets killed in a hostage situation - she could've been saved, but wasn't, for the simple sake of money? And what if she was pregnant? Only one live more, huh. Never ever weigh a person's live with money.
