My grandpa does the same thing to my brothers Indian wife, to the point where she tries to avoid him at family gatherings so he doesn't make racist jokes about her and India because it's all pretty mean

That's not what he/she means! They're just saying that news channels take a lot of things and blow them up so they can get a couple days worth of stories out of them to strike fear in us, when in reality some of the things they air are not always what they seem to us watching. Which is why we shouldn't constantly watch the news because not all of it is true in a way
