Since I’ve been summoned- text is often ambiguous. You can’t hear tone, you can’t see visual cues, sarcasm, irony, etc. can be missed completely and alter meaning- so it makes sense to try and be precise. The other sides of the dice are simple:
1. Why be generic? “That sucks.” “This things make mungo sad/angry/happy”? What’s the point to a reply at all if it doesn’t bring anything worth discussing?
2. Most things are complex and multi faceted. Humans tend to like to distill things to binary, to simplicity so we can feel “good” or “right.” Anything worth discussing is worth discussing comprehensively. If it isn’t worth discussing comprehensively, it likely isn’t worth discussing. If a thing were so simple, there would be no discussion as it wouldn’t be an issue, it would be easily solved. The fact it is being discussed means it isn’t so easy, the fact that it isn’t so easy means the complexities need addressed to understand and reconcile the issue.

i generally overlook any comment that exceeds 4 lines

As for time- new content doesn’t come up so often that unless one is determined to have “first” on every comment versus having something worth saying in every comment, one can plan a reply and then type it in pieces as one has time. Having time is much easier for some people, for instance if a great deal or your work days are spent traveling to and from different locations, in front of a computer, on the phone or tele conference, waiting for results or windows for tests, completed prototypes, etc. or just making sure other people are doing what they are supposed to be doing. That makes it much easier to sneak a minute or 5 here and there as well. But overall I think that some people come here for different reasons. Most (including me) like looking at fun memes, beyond that some have friends they can only engage here, others like to grief or troll, some like to find interesting or different perspectives in comments. It’s good fun to mentally engage by thinking about a problem...

And working out solutions and possibilities. I often post things that aren’t my personal view on a matter, but merely an exercise in thought on alternate ways to consider a thing. Then to have others give input on those ideas and have to look at those ideas and so on. By having a “peer review” of an idea, even if it doesn’t change anyone’s views, one can better understand ones own ideas, and possibly refine them or at least be better equipped to understand and respect people of different views. Those are some reasons I can think of fornparagraph posts. Oh. Also, maybe high functioning autism? That can contribute in some cases I’m sure.
parisqeen · 5 years ago
You have high functioning autism? or are you stating that that could be a general contributor to long paragraphs for people who have it?
guest_ · 5 years ago
@sephoria223- this is my job. The Russians pay me $.002 per word and all I have to do is not tell people I’m being paid by the Russi.... CRAP! See? You made me screw up. I don’t bother you at work, dang. Now I’ve gotta go do some explaining. Thanks.

@parisqueen- merely stating that it could be a contributing factor in general. If I do have high functioning autism I wouldn’t spread it around. Not due to shame, but simply because I’d consider that personal business. There are stigmas to the issue, with some thinking badly of even high functioning autistics, and some thinking autism is a super power that lets you be a math wiz or genius detective. There’s also a large number of people (Kanye being one of the latest and biggest examples I can think of) who are “loud and proud” about being diagnosed- but who use it as a justification for any action, or for plain poor behavior; or allow others to do so. In my mind I can’t support such actions as it twists genuine efforts to understand and accommodate people with certain conditions, and associates non clinically recognized behavior in the public mind. Often when one makes such things public they become an “ambassador” of sorts for a condition, for better or worse. So no. Just mentioning.

I attempt to get into longer paragraphs, not to annoy people, but so I can better my sentence composition and essay writing skills.
I also like reading posts that are long(but not what guest_ can sometimes come up with) to see what they really say in the most detailed way possible. Any video that is even ten minutes long that has a script can make even the longest manuscripts here look like chump change(and trust me, any video worth listening to, because most people are bad at being interested AND unscripted).

@guest_ Fair point. I don't really keep up with main stream media so I didn't know Kayne was autistic, not that it changes my opinion on him anyway. I think majority of the stigma lies with misunderstanding but that's a topic unrelated to the original post so I won't elaborate.

@sephora224, people come here for different reasons. Other sites have the same memes, but thanks to zeus or whomever is moderating funsub, the comment sections are 10x better here. If a visitor decides to look at comments on this site, they could totally ignore anything over four lines and still have a great experience. But I personally love it when @guest_ goes in to something in-depth (like this comment thread lol), or when @xvarnah or @mrscollector have some interesting, random tangent. I'm just saying you don't have to feel obligated to read long comments, but if you have the time, you'll see funsub is a fun little community instead of an insane assembly of annoying anons like other sites.

yeah i know i just didnt see this before im what they call a funsubstance veteran
jasonmon · 5 years ago
Lol yes I see that you are. I've only been around for a year and a half or so. It seems like the comment sections have always been this way, but maybe it's a relatively new thing.
xvarnah · 5 years ago
@jasonmon I should have known I'd get summoned here eventually lol.
Randomness and tangents ARE two of my specialities, though. The fact that you find them interesting at least is encouraging haha :)

To answer the OP - most of my reasons for leaving longer comments have been stated here already. I guess the main things would be:
-As guest_ says, I don't find there's so much new content being released to make it difficult to make the occasional long comment difficult
-I like hearing and offering insight on various topics, or even just sharing the occasional anecdote that might make someone else feel better, think differently, or laugh.
-I sometimes find it difficult to properly convey what I'm trying to say in a single sentence or so
-I am rarely on speaking terms with sleep.
-also, if there's a topic I really want to discuss, but don't have a lot of time, I have occasionally started a comment, and then come back and finished it later when I had more time

@parisqueen- apologies. Kanye didn’t come out as autistic, but bipolar. Since then he has been seeming increasingly willing to do or say things, even “against his managements advice” as though a diagnosis excuses anything a person can say or do, and enables them to be above reproach. So I meant more the general push that many people (self diagnosed or otherwise) feel that they can use that as an excuse to behave anyway they like, even when that behavior falls outside their real or self assumed condition. But as you say- off topic. I just wanted to clear up that Kanye hasn’t claimed autism that I know of.

Ah I see, I hate that as well, I've experienced it first hand and it's extremely annoying. No worries, thanks for clarifying, interesting fact I was unaware of. It's nice to be updated on "celebrity news" from somewhere/someone haha

@xavarnah That 4th point. Speaks to my soul.
rosalinas · 5 years ago
It's not that difficult
Typing actually doenst take that long (maybe that's why i always make so many typos), a long text may text from 5 to 10 mins or longer if you want to do some research beforehand.
Personally, I like to type about some embarrassing experiences of my own which I think maybe entertain people and myself a little. And how is it supposed to be funny if all the dumb details are left out
