@guest_ Man, you say a lot of things to say nothing

@mikriarktos I have to agree that this wasn't the proper forum for an essay

I can’t really say much. If I can’t explain it in a way that people an understand in 2,000 words, 50 wouldn’t likely do much better as the point is nuanced. I think Ben Shapiro is an asshole. I don’t like him from what I know of him and doubt I’d like him if he met. But- while I often disagree with him- I think that he sometimes raises good points for discussion. An “a$shole” can change its stripes- it takes time and experience. But I never said everyone had to love the guy- I just said that personally- I think he has some brains and loads of potential even if we have our disagreements and occasional other issues.

i mean at this point the meme aspect of the site has been removed imo and it's mostly community. for fresher memes i go to other social media platforms but i like the people here
nicengelman · 3 years ago
@cryoenthusiast well even then, if we're a community and not a meme site, I'm not going to miss the guy that's playing his music too loud every fucking day and parking his giant truck in the street instead of the driveway and all around making things a pain in the ass for everyone else. An asshole is an asshole is an asshole is an asshole. It's one thing to be occasionally annoying, it's another to make things excruciating for several people. If he got barred for too any downvotes? That says something. If a bunch of people reported him (which, as much as I hate him, even I never did)? That says something. The fact that this thread exists? That says something.

yeah i get it. Like oh there goes famousone. he saw the new post on the community letter board and now he's getting feisty with anyone who disagrees with him.
nicengelman · 3 years ago
I think he was a lot more than feisty
cryoenthusiast · 3 years ago
harassing?
nicengelman · 3 years ago
insulting, insanely rude, degrading, harassing, there's lots of different ways to describe it. Flat out hostile
changetheworld · 3 years ago
I'm confused. Is he actually not able to comment anymore? Or is he just choosing not to?
scatmandingo · 3 years ago
He got some indication that he couldn’t comment. No one is sure if it was because of the content of his comments or not. I think it pushed him over a line and he’s not going to return at least for a while.

famousone is actually the reason I left about two weeks ago after he told me to get the f off his website and to f off out of his country after I made the argument of protecting my family by moving to Canada if covid gets worse and Trump does nothing. I then reported the comment and the thread got removed iirc. He's toxic af and I'm happy he can't comment anymore :)

Wow you really did come back to say @camebacktosay
nicengelman · 3 years ago
He actually made several people leave, including kcat
jasonmon · 3 years ago
My enjoyment of this site has probably gone up 4x in the few days since he's been gone.
,
I feel bad for him; he must be a truly unhappy person to vent so much hate into the world, but at least he's doing it somewhere else now. I didn't like seeing him be awful to the people I like on here, day after day.

I didn’t know that about kcat (or others.) I miss kcat- kcat was a kool cat. I do just want to be clear- I’m not saying famous- or anyone- is perfect or that it is my opinion that some change wouldn’t be nice. I was just saying that I’d prefer a resolution where famousone stayed but perhaps could dial down some of the behavior that upsets people. I’ve had many good and respectful, productive and interesting chats with famousone- and if that were the version we got most of the time- I think there wouldn’t be so many issues like people are mentioning.

I don’t begrudge people their opinion on his (possibly) leaving- even if I’d rather he stayed and just could be a more civil version of self- and I understand. Jasonmon mentions some things that I can say in some part I can support- certain behaviors and ways of thinking... they indicate the world is a scary place to some people- they don’t feel safe, they feel confused. That’s a lot of people- some are more extreme in how they show that. I think the way towards healing many of the rifts we have in society is through holding these peoples hands and trying to help them see that the world isn’t so scary, and that it’s ok to feel confused- it’s just not ok to let that confusion and fear make them hurt others to try and feel safer. But- we can’t all do that all the time. We may not have the patience to deal with it, or it can be damaging to our own mental well being to do so sometimes. That’s ok too. It isn’t anyone’s job to put up with conduct they can’t approve of or stomach.

But much of the extremism we are seeing and the effects it is having on our country and our ability to work together.. or even make reasonable choices... can be traced to people who were outcast because they were just too much to deal with. In the dark of exile these people find each other and they congregate. We went from George Bush Jr. from being seen as a bit “right” as a candidate- to having Sarah Palin in spitting distance of the whitehouse- able to practically see it from her back yard one might say.... to electing... this guy we have now, all in a very short stretch. And that’s not to mention how an actual socialist made a serious run at the White House.

These are examples of where we can see that people pushed outside were able to galvanize, make their way back in, and swing others around by speaking to frustrations and fears that many people have. So in a more broad sense- I just personally think that we have to find ways to deal with and reach and come together with such people in ways that don’t push them out of society. That said- again- this is a meme site for fun, and I’m not saying anyone should have to put up with things that literally drive them to quit. When it stops being fun- something has gone wrong.
