Chores seem to be an American thing. I never had to do them when I was a kid

I wasn't aware the ET was fascist...
Anyway, to answer your actual question. My suspicion is that a child should learn to look after their own business as early as possible
For example, putting their food mess in the bin as young as they are capable of doing so. I think the child should be gently taught that their actions and inactions impact on everyone. For example, if their allocated job is to empty the dishwasher then explain the impact of them not emptying the dishwasher i.e. it results in the dishes piling up and not being able to be used for the next meal

Well, now that the unnecessary political bashing is over we can get on point. Yay.

That's a different point of view then I read and was raised under @cakelover and it is a really good point. Cause and effect is something I noticed is typically taught much later in life or isn't taught at all.

Ooh, sweet. This is an opportunity. So how did you learn to take care of a household?
thatguyyouknow · 3 years ago
We just did it
adam44 · 3 years ago
You mean when you lived with your parents or on your own?
thatguyyouknow · 3 years ago
I still live with my mum
xlaxxine · 3 years ago
May I? Well why the heck not.
.
I never really liked to visit grandparents and near 10 th grade mom and dad started to just leave me alone at home. Ar first it was instant noodles and bread, no cleaning at all, just games, eat and study a bit.
.
So, slowly i got used to cooking, laundry, still hate cleaning tho.
.
But i refuse do to any of the things when mom dad are at home.

Garbage asked an intellectual question so lets focus on that. No shitchats.
thatguyyouknow · 3 years ago
Did you call @adam44 garbage
adam44 · 3 years ago
@Xlaxxine You're wild so I'm not surprised. Haha That's not exactly what I asked but it's still relevant and interesting. Thanks, bud.

I think it depends.
.
Calling it a "chore" and teaching kids they should expect a reward for doing basic required things seems like it could have negative implications longterm
.
I think having kids participate in tasks is probably a good thing and does help build confidence. I remember I worked with someone once and she wasn't lazy or anything, but one day she came to me very quiet and asked me how you use Windex because she'd never had to before. She definitely did other chores in her home I think, but she had never had to use a cleaner of any kind, and you could tell she was embarrassed.
.
As for the age - I think that depends on the task and the kid. I think you can start at most ages nudging your kids towards things like picking up their stuff or cleaning up when they spill.
.
They probably won't *really* understand or get the hang of it until they get older, but that's no different than teaching them to walk or talk
