a horizontally opposed engine (a.k.a Boxer engine/Flat engine) is used by Porsche and Subaru to great effect. The layout means a lower center of gravity (meaning better handling such as what Porsche is legendary for), it is inherently balanced due to having piston movements perfectly opposed unlike the V engine, meaning less vibrations and no need for a balance shaft to help counteract the vibrations, making for a lighter engine than a V engine. It also has a unique sound to boot. Its not used more often due to being oddly shaped and requiring the car to be designed around the engine at times...sorry for the long comment.
