I know this comment comes a little late. I'm studying geology too.
First, it doesn't help you build something like this in your car... But, we spend a lot of time out in the field and it's a bitch trying to get all your equipment with you when you fly somewhere + it's very expensive.
Second, when we are out in the field for weeks we have to backpack everything (tent, tools, gear etc.). He has it in all in a mobile location!
