I don't know what it is, but I find "stay calm" to be much more effective than "calm down." I guess it's because the former doesn't assume that I have already gone ballistic.

i officially loose my shit when someone tells me to calm down. i was calm now this shit is real. its like telling someone to smile... give me a fucking reason to smile. you rile me up then shout calm down at me? give me a damn reason to calm.

Yeah it's really patronising when someone says calm down, I want to punch them until they pass out but then I realise I'm not strong enough
