You can actually see in the videos that he was pulling the kid slowly closer so he could have a safer grip. He maybe didn‘t want to risk and pull him with one hand it that angle so that the kid wouldn‘t slip out of his hands.
In the video you can better see what an awkward angle he's at, as well as the fact there is a woman who is apparently holding on to him as well, to keep him from tipping over
