Derek spent money on singing lessons because singing is the one thing he knows his brother Brennan beats him at.
That is why for the talent show while his brother sings opera, Derek could only lipsink and dance to Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby.
This is also why Derek decided to get his buddies to join him in the choir of the Opera song and chant "Brennan has a man-gina". All because he knew if Brennan got to sing his song he would win the talent show.
Honestly if it wasn't for this one moment in Brennan's life who knows what could of happen he could of became a professional opera singer. But he grew up with a dick of a little brother.
