Agreed, I didn't say it wasn't important from time to time, but it's always started by a few evil asshats. Freedom is worth death. Famousone , my dad fought in Korea, I was in the first gulf war and Somalia, he used to have a tapestry of paratroops jumping into combat. The saying on the tapestry was"Airborne provides the enemy the maximum opportunity to give his life for his country ". He lied about his age, went in at 16, I think he was still 17 when he made his first combat jump. I couldn't imagine myself doing that at 17.
My grandpa served towards the end of WW2 in the 10th Mountain. I'm the only member of my family to serve since then, but my mentors and some family friends saw the worst of Vietnam, Somalia, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
I hope I can be half the man they are.
Some of my Great Uncles were in WW2, one was at the Battle of Buldge with 101st. My dad's dad was a sack of shit, my mom's dad was lumbering and he used a bar against his legs to pry a guy out that got crushed with a tree, the guy lived but it messed up my grandpa's knee for the rest of his life. My grandpa would have gone in the service after Pearl Harbor if he could have walked right.

My great grandfather was an airplane mechanic in Hawaii. He used to joke that the only thing he ever killed was his hair from wearing those heavy-ass helmets.
My grandfather served in the Pacific during WW2, I was the only one of his descendants who really wanted to serve, but no branch would accept me, even as a chaplain.
Asthma, Chiari malformation (my Cerebellum descends through the spinal opening, restricting CSF flow and constricting the brain itself), bone spurs in my spine. They said asthma alone would have been bad enough, but the other stuff, no chance, no matter what I tried for.
Because if people could not die, life would trip on it's own heel.
