I'm pretty sure they're all flags from different countries as a symbol to say you've been there. Not that it makes it okay to put shit on a mountain but it's better than just plain littering.

Ocean liners found they could simply travel at half speed and charge passengers more because everyone believed the earth was round and every place is farther away anyway.
