I rlly love V for Vendetta so to me I see him as more of a hero or antihero sorta guy. What he stands for is the good of the people but his methods weren’t the best.

He was a fundamental Catholic terrorist who wanted to blow up the parliament as it was run by Protestants. Not quite sure if this is hero material.

Lol. He’s a symbol largely. Wether he was a hero or villain depends a lot on your perspective- and your level of interest in the politics of his time. Fawkes was a Catholic at a time that Protestants ran the country and Catholics were not popular. The real Fawkes is not indicated to be an anarchist- but he didn’t like the way the country was ran and met some guys who didn’t like it either. Fawkes participated in a plot to blow up parliament and was caught. He resisted torture for days before giving up his co conspirators. He was hung. The holiday associated with his name was celebrated for the fact the King survived the plot. Effigies of the pope were burned on bonfires, and later those effigies became Fawkes, and more recently the burning of effigies fell out of favor and fire works were used instead.

The fact he was the most prominent and first named conspirator associated with the plot probably helped him gain recognition- and his later substitution on the non fire for the pope (as England and the Vatican thawed icy relations) probably helped- but the film V for Vendetta brought the name to the mainstream and the books before that brought it to a wider audience than likely would have known who he was world wide.

As for hero or villain- his start as a “persecuted minority” speaks to many and sets up a hero. With royalty falling out of favor in most countries for other types of rule, and royalty already often being unpopular with “common” folk but becoming quite unpopular world wide and a symbol of repression and exploitation through the 1700’s into the early 20th century- the fact he tried to blow up a king makes many people more sympathetic.

So he’s an under dog, who is seen as anti establishment or anarchist (records don’t show him to really be either- most accounts indicate he’d have been happy with a Catholic monarchy restored...) and tales of his wit and defiance and resilience in capture, torture, and death- signs of courage and anti establishment- also are traits often associated with folk heroes.

But the flip side is that you could all him a freedom fighter or rebel- or terrorist/traitor given he participated in a plot against his government. For many- at least subconsciously they don’t separate the man from the film/book character V.

Tl:dr- heroes and villains in history are a matter of perspective. Even more so the further removed we are from the time and place and the more different our world is from the one we are looking through time at. Oliver North, Edward Snowden, Che Guevara, Oscar Schindler, Osama Bin Ladin, Robert E Lee, Benedict Arnold, George Washington- these are all contemporary examples of men who wether they are heroes or not depends on your philosophy, morality, and perspective on who the “good guys” even are. Fawkes was a man who believed something and was willing to kill, or die, for it. He was tough and intelligent and fed up. That speaks to many people. But it was so long ago and such a different time that the politics and all that mean almost nothing today- so he is whatever you make of him.

Hero or not his opening monologue was sheer genius. "This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valourous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition!"
