Ummmm..... firstly, our school lunch liked nothing like that, and having visited my old elementary through high schools over the years still looks nothing like that. Secondly- not sure what ones left or right leanings have to do with anything here- but Harry Truman (a moderate Democrat) started the school lunch program. Since Truman we have had 5 democrats as presidents and 7 Republicans- and “right” or “left” is relative- but at a total of 6/7 for each party administering school lunches, it’s close to even and none of them seem to have “fixed” school lunches no?

The inclusion of candies and “junk” foods began in the 70’s under Nixon and Ford (R). Spending cuts to school lunch programs occurred under Ronald Reagan in the 80’s, and in the early 90’s under Bush Sr. Private companies like McDonald’s and Little Caesars began being brought in to contract with schools. Under Bush Jr. healthy options for lunches were scaled back in the early 2000’s, and in the 2010’s under Obama the healthy hunger free kids act was passed placing healthier options back on the menu.

But it’s far more complex than all that. Liberals or conservatives, Democrat or Republican- neither is solely to blame for the state of schools or school lunch- but if you’re going to try to pin things on “the left” at least know your history well enough to do so and not look like a clown and a shill.
