I work in one of the most open and liberal countries on this Earth. At my company (a big multinational), we have a Diversity and Inclusion Officer. One day he is visiting from HQ and is intent on running a number of awareness sessions (as part of his KPI).
He is openly gay, shaved bald, with one brow only and a piercing through the side of his mouth. The conversation goes like this:
Him: "We need to carry out these exercises. Please freeze a couple of days on everyone's calendars for mandatory training."
HR: "Training on what?"
Him: "Diversity and Inclusion. Gay people in this office are being oppressed"
HR: *stares and blinks*
Him: "Yes. Say you have 300 people here and 10% of them are gay. They are being oppressed".
HR: *stares and blinks again*
Him: "Please freeze everyone's calendars and lock everyone in for mandatory training"
HR: "You do realize sexuality is not a factor when deciding hires?"
Him: "Why? We need to have more gay people in the company!"
HR: "... what?"

I'm pretty sure that in these cases, they wouldn't mind his hand on their back... just sayin'. He's the one having to act overly cautious, which is sad... :(

Wow, I read the article and while there's merit in the argument that a more diverse and inclusive FD is worthwhile, the reasons themselves undermine the argument.
So we should have more women because 64% of calls to firefighters are actually medical emergencies? Well, how about raising awareness towards misguided calls to firefighters instead of EMS?!
More ethnical diversity? Yeah. But not as a result of affirmative acction. It's been proven that affirmative action only creates resentment and suspicion of the beneficiaries.
Now:
Did the research show how many candidates are M vs F (or Black v White)? No.
Did the research show what is the overall pass/fail ratio on the aptitude tests? No.
Did the research show what is the pass/fail ratio between men and women? No.
I think that until these things are looked into, you can interview as many people as you like, but you'll never address the real issue.

PETA yet again... Shearing and trimming hooves is critical to maintain comfort "in" and disease "out". So yeah, for an organization that's all about animal welfare, they don't know much about it.

Agreed, except on the rats being plague carriers. A recent study has shown it was mostly fleas and lice that spread the plague, so a basic lack of hygiene was to blame.
