That I agree with. For me, youtubers are like newspaper writers, and provide the service with a lot of revenue. I also believe that the internet as a whole is a public utility and needs to be regulated as such.

That's a very bad analogy. A phone company is a public utility that this country actively relies upon for it's day to day operations. YouTube is a big, electronic video message board. And yes, the government can deny people access to telecommunications depending on how they use them. It happens all the time.

Thats "most peoples" fault, then. YouTube is not a public commons; it's a private company with their own rules. They do not have any responsibility to host anything.

Nothing requires YouTube to host anything. It's a platform, not a repository. They're not deleting history; that stuff still exists, it's just not on YouTube anymore.

Being born rich means you've already succeeded, or at least have the image of success, which may be more important.

Soviet art is fascinating to me. Just like everything else, it was all planned and had a purpose: to extol the values of communism and create an impenetrable aura.

That's not quite accurate. A Zulu leader (not the whole tribe or nation) is worried that forcefully taking land from white farmers is reminiscent of their people being forced off their land during apartheid. Also, RT (Russia Today) is a state run news company, and the plight of white farmers and land owners is a dog whistle for nationalists who want to prove that white people are being oppressed.

Corporations don't care about you or your problems. All they want is your money, and they'll try to find the most effective way to do it.

I know I'm late to the conversation but here's my two cents: the US is unique for two very specific reasons. First, our transition of power is peaceful, legal, and codified. Second, our military does not swear an oath to a leader, but to protect the constitution, which is the same oath all civil service workers take as well. I had to take it when I joined Americorps. Both of these get to the broader point that we are a nation of systems and laws; we may have trail blazed, but I do think others have passed us by in some areas.

Season 2 of Avatar is one of my favorite seasons ever. Depending on the day you ask me, The Crossroads of Destiny is my favorite episode of all time, too.

The US spends almost 18% of our GDP on health care, which comes out to about 10K per person, per year. The cost is way too high for how awful, in general, the outcomes are. My anecdote: I spent $700 on a hearing exam because it was a specialist appointment and there's only one in my state. The result of the exam: inconclusive, come back later and pay another $700. Fuck that, we can do better.

How? It's a legal document compelling somebody to attend. It shouldn't matter who the target is, they are legally compelled to show.

I usually played the series as Fem Shep and romanced Garrus. I also did one playthrough by romancing Liara in the first game and doing the whole unrequited love thing in the second. Makes for a good story.

Public libraries don’t get enough love 3 comments

It's one of the few indoor public places where there is zero expectation for you to do anything. You can sit and stare for all they care. More importantly, it's sheltered. I work homeless people in a very cold city, and the library is a great refuge for a lot of my guests.

I think the idea of serial killers as charismatic is over blown. Most are manipulative and target people, often women and those on the edges of society, and prey on them. By most accounts, serial killers aren't suave, Hannibal Lecter types, but remorseless predators.

They don't invest anything. They just threaten to move the team and bitch about "tradition" while taking billions in public money.

Do you tolerate intolerance? Do you tolerate somebody being an asshole, or being a racist? How far does your tolerance go? This always reminds me of the old canard that we have to tolerate old people being awful because they're from "a different time."

A train may be 2 or 3 hours slower, but theres also no security and that "get here two hours early" shit. Plus, better legroom and you can walk around. Trains are great.
