Wow. Maybe he had finished his job at the crash and is just being a caring human by keeping a small child company while they are being treated. I don't think you would quite suit a job around people who need help. Perhaps go into an office job where there is minimal human interaction.

He was calming a rightfully terrified child, which is a very good use of time, not a waste. There may not of been anyone else to calm the child. Wouldn't you feel guilty if you saw a child in that state and you just left them because it "wasn't your job"?
