To a lot of the Allied forces, they switched sides. After the Germans took control, they forced most of the troops and able bodied civilians to fight, and most did with very little resistance. Collaborator used to be a curse word for the french and in france for a generation or two

He should have reported his car stolen first then said he thinks they might be using it to move cocaine. That would give him plausible deniability for having cocaine in his car

The ladders look pretty solid, the weight and pressure are distributed ok so long as he's using the rungs to hold it together. It's the guy on the ladder's having his heels off that will probably mess it up.
