I get that smartphones are new tech, but self portraits are older than photography itself. Besides, they didn't say he was using a smartphone; I don't use a smartphone for photography.

That's a neon bulb, not really that uncommon. The best known is the flickering flame type, but they can be given any shape and the neon will light up around the shape

They could be Dutch. I've been with the same woman for 16 years, not married. No kids, though. My coworker has two kids, has been with their mom for almost 20 years, not married.
