Latin gave rise to the romantic languages like Spanish, French, and Italian. Germanic languages are languages like Dutch, Norweigian, and the aforementioned German & English.

It’s not entirely correct to say English is derived from German though, that would be like saying humans evolved from chimps. Also, English has had a LOT of French influence, moreso than the other Germanic languages
