I know, and it pisses me off! I mean, imagine if this was 2018 instead of 1963. The entire story would have been so different! They could've moved somewhere together, could've been officially together, could've married and had kids and just live a good life. Instead there's this stupid law bullshit that forced them to hide everything and those guys that killed him? No prosecution. No punishment or shame. Just "he was hit in the face by an exploding tire" like they expect us all to fucking believe that

And it wasn't fair to the women they married, either. Imagine loving someone and finding out that they're using you as a shield to avoid prosecution. You can't just up and leave them like "Yeah fuck you, get shanked or w/e idc" because if you bring it up shit can happen.
