This shows electricity arcing. The transformer is that garbage-can-looking thing hanging on the pole. Usually, they are filled with oil to insulate the windings. If they are used beyond their rating or have an internal fault, they will heat up and boil the insulating oil. There is a pressure relief valve but if that fails, kaboom.
