Captain here : the boy had a terrible skin disease on most of his body. His skin was so sensitive, it peeled like a hot sweet potatoe. The poor boy had to deal with terrible infected wounded. Despite various antibiotic treatments, he was in terrible pain since he was a baby.
Italian scientists use gene therapy and created artificial skin based on the rare good skin left on the boy's body. They replaced then 80% of the boy's skin. Now, he can even play outside and don't need painkillers. This operation was kept secret for several years, because scientists wanted to be sure this operation would work first.
It did, indeed, but the disease is still here (and it also affect mucous, that are harder to change) so he might need another operation later.
