My professor has adopted a boy from Vietnam and a boy from India, and she spoke about her experience. In some countries like Vietnam, there is a demand for adopted babies, so parents are exploited. The reason she adopted her second son from India is because they have a very strict adoption system to be sure A) there are absolutely relatives that want him and B) he will be well cared for in America. It took years from first contacting the orphanage to actually meeting their son. The reason there are 9,000 unadopted children in India is because India saw the exploitation that went on in other countries because there were more people who wanted to adopt than there were availiable babies.

But there are parts of reality that we have no organ to detect, like electricity, gravity, radiation, etc. and so we convert them into forms we can detect like light bulbs or clicks on a Geiger counter.

Yes. FRD replaced his Vice President several times, which is how Truman became president. No one expected FDR to die, so Truman was inexperienced when he came into office. It worked out okay though.

Another good Death. I've only just started reading the Discworld series, though.

During Florida winters, manatees flock to nuclear and coal power plants for the warm 12 comments
engineer · 7 years ago
Probably not. What they are swimming by might be the warm water that had been used as coolant, which is safe and not irradiated because it was a safe distance from the reactor. As for the coal plants, it might be the water that had been used for steam generators. Although it should theoretically be put through an endless loop, in practice the water has to be changed out sometime.

There are some things we can detect without seeing. No one can see electric current running through a wire, but we know it exists when a light bulb lights up. No one can see radio waves, microwaves, or gamma rays, but we still use them. When we don't have an organ to detect something, we convert it into a form we can.
