I think you're missing the point.. he's making his buddy the priority and sending the message that him exercising is something to be proud of, not something to hide.
Sorry, I wasn't clear at first. I thought, that he came with his friend, because he was embarassed (I translate it for myself like he was ashamed to go in there, because people could see him there and make fun of him) and probably didn't want much people to see him, but his friend just take a photo of him in foreground and leave it on the internet. Like yeah, once he could be fit and see this photo and be proud about himself, but I don't think he is proud about it now, when he was scared only to go there and be seen by few people.
I find it hilarious that there is this stigma about being overweight at a gym. That is why those places were designed. To the super fit/buff people... you won... just leave so those of us who need it don't have to wait in lines for equipment.
