Don't give in. My mom told me when I was four because of this very reason and I still hold it against her a little. The magic was worth it, and I'm sure when she is older and finds out, she'll be even extra appreciative that you were the one paying for it all, yet you didn't break.
I have to agree, dear Guest. Why resent the fact that you're maintaining what little magic we have in our lives? This is coming from an unrepentant realist, mind you.
You could tell her? My parents never encouraged me to belive in Santa, so I never did. But, when I got a good present, I knew who it was from and that they went out and really thought about what I wanted, which made it tht much more special, imho.
Year after year you will say Santa got you this or that. But when they get older they will know who really got them the gifts. So don't ruin the wonder that is Christmas just so you can have praise for the gifts you give. Remember it is a season for giving not receiving. Besides you and everyone else will know when your child says Santa gave me this it means you did.
A lot of parents have Santa fill the stocking and bring one or two really special gifts, and make the rest from themselves. This is something we do for my kids.
Santa was always a little joke when I was a kid, we got gifts from him, frosty, the Grinch, and all the rest, kept or imaginations alive without being lied to
