I used to believe this. I think the more intelligent you are, the more terrible and compelling your demons can be, and you might have to work a bit harder to find optimisms to counter them - but that's not to say it can't be done. There are plenty of intelligent, happy people out there. In hindsight I think this is actually a pretty dangerous idea to circulate because it can convince people (remember, most of us think we're smarter than average) that they can't be happy, and happy people tend to make better decisions. Happiness is too important to justify away.
